Have You Found Your Calling? 4 Ways to Tell!

Screen shot 2014-12-17 at 4.18.49 PMHow do you know if you’ve found your calling?

Many people I talk to are very passionate about making a difference in the world. But they are stuck somewhere in the process.

For some they don’t know what they have to offer. For others they have too many choices. In either case, the question is “What is really my calling?”

So I thought I’d mention a few of the things I look for in helping people narrow down their search.

1. Inevitability – When you find your calling your response may be “Of course! I always knew that.” It often is lying right in front of you, in open view – the thing you love, the thing you’re great at, the thing you’ve always done for free. You just never put it together with how it could help others, or how it could provide you with a livelihood. You take it for granted or think your Calling must be much grander than what you already know. So look close to home!

2. Passion – Joseph Campbell told us to follow our bliss, but he might have also suggested we follow our passion. We each have a spark within us that can ignite into a flame, whether it’s for something we deeply care about or are incensed about or an inner urgency to create or teach what we know. Don’t hold back on what you feel most strongly about, even if you think it’s “already been done.” The world needs your voice!

3. Excitement – Often when the pieces come together and we see the possibility for creating our unique form of work, there’s an explosion of excitement and creative ideas. This is a sign that you’re definitely on the right track! Let those ideas flow and see where they lead. You may still have choices to make, but you’re in the right territory, for sure!

4. Fear – Yes, fear! Very often the thing we’re here to do is a stretch for us. It may require us to show up more fully, take a stand for something, even reveal to the world the very thing we’ve been trying to hide – because THAT is exactly what we’re here to help others with!

If you’ve not found your calling yet part of the reason may be that your ego is busy trying to keep you “safe,” not having to take those bigger risks of showing up fully in the world.

But here’s a secret: you don’t have to wait until your calling is loud and clear as a trumpet. If you start taking steps forward, it will become more clear in the process.

As 2014 winds to a close and we look to the start of a new year, you can use that “energy of beginning” to support you in taking those steps forward.
